Here is an eloquent and comprehensive reality check aimed at Kurt Campbell and Rush Doshi’s April 10 article, “Underestimating China,” in Foreign Affairs. It rightly sees a drift of Democrat Beltway China policy from hegemonic nostalgia to hegemonic fantasy. Even without Trump’s implosion of American leadership credibility, the idea of Sheriff Campbell ordering his deputy sheriffs (including Vietnam) to declare hostility to China and fealty to the U.S. is absurd. With Trump, what country would consider China less predictable and more disruptive than the U.S.? The harder question is, what would be the post-Trump options for U.S. policy toward China?

Finally someone saying it. The Democrats have two main problems when it comes to China.

1) They act as if the Republicans or America's own internal issues don't exist when talking about US foreign policy.

2) They pretend it's still 1995 and seem unaware the world has changed.

New times call for new thinking.
